This is, more or less, the actual checklist we run through when a new client signs up. Nothing on it is secret — local SEO isn't magic, it's housekeeping done consistently. The reason it works as a service is that most business owners don't have the time, and most of their competitors give up by month two.
If you'd rather do it yourself, here's the list. Work top to bottom.
On-page basics (your website)
- City name in your page titles — "Best Dentist in Pune | Sharma Dental", not just "Home"
- Location mentioned in meta descriptions
- City and neighbourhood names used naturally in your content (naturally — if it reads like a robot wrote it, rewrite it)
- A proper contact page with address, phone, and an embedded map
- LocalBusiness schema markup
- Pages loading in under 3 seconds on a phone — test on your own mobile data, not office Wi-Fi
- Everything usable on a small screen
Google Business Profile
- Profile claimed and verified
- The most specific primary category you can find
- Every field completed — most profiles we audit are half empty, which is your opportunity
- 10+ genuine photos
- One post a week
- Every review answered within a couple of days
- Messaging switched on
Reviews
- A fixed habit of asking happy customers — right after the bill is the best moment
- Your direct review link saved as a WhatsApp quick-reply
- Negative reviews answered calmly (your reply is for the next hundred readers, not the complainer)
- 4.5★ average or better as the goal
- Best reviews displayed on your website too
Listings elsewhere
- Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART (where it fits your trade)
- Facebook and Instagram business pages
- The same name, address, and phone number everywhere — Google cross-checks, and disagreements cost you trust
One war story: we once traced a client's stuck rankings to an old directory listing showing their shop address from before they moved. One correction, and things started moving within weeks. Check your old listings.
Content and local links
- Blog posts answering what your customers actually ask you across the counter
- A page per area you serve, if you serve several
- Membership listings — trade associations, market associations
- Tie-ups with nearby complementary businesses (the tailor recommends the boutique, the boutique recommends the tailor)
- Any local press or community mentions you can earn
Technical
- Sitemap submitted in Google Search Console
- Broken links fixed
- HTTPS (the padlock)
- Images compressed, with alt text
- Mobile usability report in Search Console showing zero errors
Measurement
- Google Analytics installed
- Search Console connected
- Rankings checked monthly — not daily; daily checking only raises blood pressure
- Business Profile insights reviewed monthly
- Calls and enquiries counted, because that's the number that matters
What to expect, and when
| Timeframe | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| Month 1 | Profile complete, listings cleaned up |
| Month 2–3 | Maps visibility improves, first ranking movement |
| Month 4–6 | Page 1 for your main local keywords |
| Month 6+ | Steady enquiries without ad spend |
These timelines come from our own client work, not a textbook. Crowded markets (food, salons) run slower; niche trades run faster.
