How to Rank Your Local Business on Google Maps

A practical guide for Indian small businesses to appear in Google's local pack — written from real client work, not theory.

6 min read

One of our clients runs a small two-wheeler garage in Ahmedabad. One shop, no big board, no franchise behind him. In his area there are service centres three times his size. Today, when someone nearby searches "garage near me for bike", his shop comes up first — above all of them — and he gets 5 to 10 customers a day from that listing alone.

Nothing about that was luck. Google Maps rankings follow a method, and the method is learnable. Here is the one we actually use.

Why the map pack decides who gets the call

When someone searches "dentist in Maninagar" or "tiffin service near me", Google shows a map with three businesses before anything else. Most people call one of those three and never scroll further. If you're fourth, you might as well be fortieth.

And these aren't casual browsers. Someone searching "near me" at 7 pm wants to buy tonight. That's why a map ranking is worth more to a local shop than almost any other kind of visibility.

Step 1: Claim the profile (half of you already have one)

Google often creates listings automatically from directory data. So first search your own business name on Maps. If a listing exists, claim it at business.google.com rather than creating a duplicate — duplicates confuse Google and split your reviews.

Then verify. Phone and video verification are instant when offered; the postcard route takes a week or two. Until this is done, nothing else matters — unverified profiles simply don't rank.

Step 2: Fill in everything. Yes, everything.

Open any profile that ranks well and you'll notice it's complete. Most profiles we audit are about half filled. Go through each field:

  • Name — your actual business name. Resist stuffing keywords into it ("Raj Electronics Best AC Repair Mumbai" gets listings suspended).
  • Primary category — the single most specific one. "Two Wheeler Repair Shop" beats "Repair Shop".
  • Hours — including festival days. A customer who arrives at a closed shop because your profile lied will remember it.
  • Description — 750 characters about what you do and the areas you serve, written like a human.
  • Photos — at least ten real ones. Shopfront, interior, your work, your team. Phone photos are fine; stock photos fool nobody, including Google.

Step 3: Reviews — the part most owners do wrong

Reviews are the strongest ranking lever you control, and the habit matters more than the count. What works for our clients:

  1. Ask at the moment the customer is happiest — bike just serviced, bill just paid.
  2. Make it effortless: WhatsApp them your direct review link. Nobody types your shop name into Google to find the review button.
  3. Reply to every single review. The reply is read by the next hundred customers, not the one who wrote it.

Our garage client sits at a 5.0 rating not because every customer was ecstatic, but because every happy one was asked. And no, you cannot pay to remove a bad review — anyone selling that service is lying to you. Bury it under genuine five-stars instead.

Step 4: Keep the profile alive

Google notices activity. A post a week — an offer, a new product, a Diwali greeting — tells the algorithm the business is open and trading. It takes ten minutes and most of your competitors won't bother, which is exactly why it works.

Step 5: Make your other listings agree

Google cross-checks your name, address, and phone number against Justdial, your Facebook page, your website, and every other place you're listed. If your old shop address is still floating around on some directory from 2019, fix it. Inconsistency reads as unreliability.

How long does it take?

Honestly: a few weeks to a few months, depending on your area. A food outlet we manage in Ghatlodiya — crowded food market, heavy competition — took steady work to reach the top for its area searches, and now holds a 4.9★ rating across 130+ reviews. The garage, in a less crowded niche, moved faster. Either way, the shops that win are the ones that keep at it after week two.

If you'd rather hand it over

This is literally our day job. We set up, verify, and manage Google Business Profiles for shops, clinics, and restaurants — the two examples above are real clients you can read about. Talk to us if you want the same done for your business.
